SJCAM SJ8 Pro, Plus & Air – The new Action WiFi Action Camera for Outdoor sports photography enthusiasts

SJCAM has some new action Cameras in the entry-level blocks. The manufacturer wants to be at the top at any price and brings out a new series: SJ8 Pro, SJ8 Plus and SJ8 Air on the market. They were announced for the first quarter of 2018. It is always delayed, as we know from the past. So it is in this case. But that is because they do not want to bring the products too hastily on the market. Errors should be eliminated and the functions properly tuned. So it will probably be the camera at the earliest from April.

SJCAM SJ8 Pro – The New flagship Action Camera of SJCAM

Let’s start with the most powerful model in the new 8 Series. The SJCAM SJ8 Pro will surely be the most coveted action cam SJCAM offers. It combines the positive qualities of the SJ7 Star and the SJ6 Legend.

SJCAM SJ8 Pro specifications:

  • Ambarella H22S85
  • SONY IMX377
  • 4K @ 60fps / 1080p @ 120fps
  • 12MP photos
  • 30M waterproof in underwater housing (IP68)
  • 8x zoom
  • 7-ply aspherical lens
  • WiFi 2.4 / 5.8GHz
  • H.264 / H.265
  • 1200mAh battery
  • Dual stereo microphones
  • cloud storage
  • Gyro Stabilizer (EIS)
  • 2.33 “IPS LCD touch screen
  • 0.96 “front screen
  • voice control
  • Connection SJCAM remote and external microphone

Powerful technology in a small housing

The flagship is equipped with the Ambarella H22S85 system-on-chip. The on-board 1.2GHz quad-core ARM® Cortex®-A53 CPU will deliver decent power in the small box. Pleasing is the fact that the chip is capable of compressing videos with the H.265 (10-bit HEVC-10) codec.

With the power of the SJCAM SJ8 Pro, 4K video at 60fps will be a breeze. For comparison, the SJCAM SJ7 Star comes at 4K to “only” 30fps. 1080p, FullHD, takes up the SJ8 Pro with 120fps. This makes slow motions of the finest possible.

7 lenses in the lens with aspherical lenses avoid distortions of the image familiar from wide-angle lenses. The 1200mAh battery will certainly give the SJ8 Pro an operating life of over an hour at full resolution. The lower the resolution, the longer the battery will last. The energy-saving chip makes it possible. A dual stereo microphone is also installed. There are rumors that it could be used for noise cancellation. Whether this will be so, we will learn at the latest to the release.

Dual screen for a better overview

The 2.33 “IPS touch screen should be equipped with a higher pixel density than known from other touch screens in this segment. It may be as fluid as known from smartphones. The operation may be even better. But we will only see that for publication.

As with the SJCAM SJ6 Legend, the SJ8 Pro has a 0.96” front LCD screen. I did not really need such a small display on the front. Meanwhile, I appreciate it. Depending on how the camera is mounted, you can see the most necessary information at a glance, without taking the camera out of position again.

Functions that should be standard by now

With the underwater housing it is waterproof up to 30 meters – we all know that from every other Action Cam. Please do not use the 8x zoom. The zoom is digital, so you prefer taking pictures and videos in full resolution and zooms on the PC if needed, that’s the same.

Image stabilization using a Gyrosensor is now known by everyone under the name “EIS” (Electronic Image Stabilization). The stabilization of the videos will probably work at least until 4K. Whether 4K is compensated with 60fps is unlikely.

The SJCAM SJ8 Pro uses USB-C for fast data transfer, but also for FPV and image transfer. RAW is there for the more professional among you. With the topic “GPS” there are still no reliable answers. It’s an oft-requested feature, but hopefully it will soon be seen if it will eventually be installed.

The release of the SJ8 series is scheduled for the first quarter of 2018, but if it is really respected, no one can say for sure. SJCAM has postponed the appointment in the past, so we had to wait longer.

SJCAM SJ8 Plus – The middle class

The SJCAM SJ8 Plus is the second, highly-equipped camera in the SJ8 series. Here, however, a Novatek NTK96683 processor works together with the 12.0MP SONY IMX117 image sensor. Here are up to 4K30 possible, otherwise the cameras are largely the same functions (2.33″ touch screen, 7-layer lens, H.265, gyro image stabilizer, 1200mAh battery, Dual screen).

SJCAM SJ8 Plus specifications:

  • Novatek 96683
  • SONY IMX117
  • 4K @ 30fps / 1080p @ 120fps
  • 12MP photos
  • 30M waterproof in underwater housing (IP68)
  • 7-layer aspherical lens
  • WiFi
  • H.264 / H.265
  • 1200mAh battery
  • Gyro stabilizer
  • 2.33 “IPS LCD touch screen
  • 0.96 “front screen
  • Connection SJCAM remote and external microphone

SJCAM SJ8 Air – For the slim purse

The SJCAM SJ8 Air is the entry-level model of the SJ8 series. It is equipped with the Novatek NTK96658 processor and the 14 megapixel Panasonic MN34110PA image sensor. This allows photos with a resolution of up to 14 megapixels, videos with a maximum of 1080P. As with the two more powerful models, a 2.33″ touch screen was installed here as well as the 1200mAh battery, the 7-layer lens and the gyro image stabilization. It is also possible to control the camera with the SJCAM remote control and to connect an external microphone. The compression with the H.265 codec is unfortunately not possible here, which is at 1080P but probably to get over.

SJCAM SJ8 Pro specifications:

  • Novatek 96658
  • Panasonic MN34110PA
  • 1080p @ 60fps
  • 14MP photos
  • 30M waterproof in underwater housing (IP68)
  • 7-layer aspherical lens
  • WiFi
  • H.264
  • 1200mAh battery
  • Gyro stabilizer
  • 2.33 “IPS LCD touch screen
  • 0.96 “front screen
  • Connection SJCAM remote and external microphone

YI 4K+ vs. SJCAM SJ8 PRO

Probably the best action cam at the moment is probably the YI 4K+. At first glance, the two cameras seem very similar, if not the same. That means the new SJ8 PRO has nothing new to offer. But differences already exist between the two. The SJCAM SJ8 not only has a slightly larger screen than the YI 4K+ with 2.33″. In addition, the camera also has a 0.96″ LCD on the front. In addition, the compression will be possible with the H.265 codec. A big plus. For that, the SJ8 Pro will use the slightly weaker Ambarella H22, whereas the YI 4K+ will use the Ambarella H2, which is more powerful. Otherwise, the two cameras will only differ from him software. This is by no means to be underestimated. Without a good and mature software, even a top-of-the-line Action Cameras will not become a top seller.

What the SJCAM SJ8 PRO will actually do, we will see when the camera is finally on the market. If she will be better then the YI 4K+, then it will be possible to say after a comparison. With good support, big community, and support, YI will be hard to beat.
