These drones had a little hype after their first appearance a few years ago when she was introduced at the Tonight Show by Jimmy Fallon. The original by Parrot is available for about 70€, coming from China there are again much cheaper versions, which we have already tested. The special feature of the drones: they jump up to one meter high.
Compared to the more expensive model, some of the Chinese versions have a little less features. The cheapest models can’t be controlled with an app and there is no camera to record the ride! Nevertheless, the China gadget also has the most important feature on the included remote control: a jump function, which allows the drone to jump up to 80cm. The battery life is about 15-20 minutes and it is powered by a power supply with USB cable.
The model I have at home is one with camera and app control. In addition, more functions than just the live transmission of the image are possible. In this way, paths and actions can be defined and executed automatically, and there are several different manoeuvres such as a twist and a kind of “dance”. As far as the quality of the case is concerned, it should not be inferior to the original, and even breakneck jumps (and falls) the drone has survived well so far.
The wheels remain either close to the drone (as in most of the pictures and also in the video) or can be pulled out. This makes it a little wider turning circle and in my experience the steering is a little more precise. Here again the video from the Tonight Show to show you the original.
If you don’t need the camera, but just want to drive around with the drone and inspire your friends, you’ll get a cool gadget with the slimmed down version. Unsuspecting people can be terrified by the drone’s jump – I speak from experience.
