This screwdriver set, which belongs to the Xiaomi Mi Home series, appeared in the shops last week. Besides comparable sets from China (and even from Germany) the price seems quite high, but Xiaomi also focuses on design and quality. But is that enough to justify the price?
German quality and Chinese elegance?
The tools are produced in cooperation with the German tool manufacturer Wiha, which is also extensively referred to in advertising graphics. This may be particularly beneficial for sales in China (“German quality”).
Precision mechanics sets like this are used, as the name suggests, for small screwdriving jobs, such as smartphones and laptops. Don’t even think about building your living room closet with it.
The set contains 24 individual steel bits in addition to the screwdriver/handle. These are different models, namely:
- Phillips/cross slot (PH000 / PH00 / PH0 / PH1 / PH2)
Slot (1.5 / 2.0 / 3.0 / 4.0)
Hex (H1.5 / H2.0)
Torx (T2 / T3 / T4 / TR5 / TR6 / TR6 / TR8 / TR10 / TR15)
Pozi (P2 / P5)
The box and handle are made of aluminium, the bits of steel. Of course, design is also a typical feature of Xiaomi. At first glance, the box looks like one of Xiaomi’s Powerbanks; the grey exterior is brushed aluminium and shows the Mijia and Wiha logos in white. Inside each bit is individually marked, which makes the whole thing nice and clear. The box is 168 x 67 x 17 mm in size, which makes it quite comfortable to store and transport.
Only the question of price remains: Is the set worth the $20+? Similar sets are available for only a few Euros in Germany, although the quality is often poor. A look at Amazon shows some sets for less money, where you can usually find single screwdrivers (and not bits). The Xiaomi set is a little more space-saving and the comfort of holding the handle is also important.
