GoPro is now the sixth generation of its Action Cam. The market seems to be more than saturated, but still more cameras are added each month. Recently SJCAM introduced the SJ8, bringing out a new top model. In the mid-class, however, the MGCOOL Explorer 2C is located.

Design & processing
Regarding the external appearance of the MGCOOL Explorer 2C, the manufacturer has strived for an outdoor-oriented look. No side of the Action Cam is completely smooth, but the edge is especially ribbed, which allows an improved grip. Although the front is largely matt, which is however by a small hatched area at the bottom again canceled. The back consists for the most part of the 2 inch LTPS touch screen.
Despite the touchscreen, the small camera offers a total of four function buttons. The front is equipped with the obligatory power button and the top offers the trigger, which is also decorated with the appropriate camera icon. On the right are two navigation buttons. The top of it also acts as a Wi-Fi button. The left side is for the connections. In addition to Micro-USB for charging the Action Cam, there is also a Micro-HDMI interface. Also at this position is the microSD slot, in which microSD cards with a maximum capacity of 64 GB can be used.
The most important feature with an Action Cam now seems to be a 4K resolution. Although the MGCOOL Explorer 2C is advertised as a 4K Action Cam, but this feature is not in their name. Because, as with many cameras of this price class, there is no native 4K resolution on the eyes, but only a high-resolution resolution of 4096 × 2160 pixels. More, the Novatek 96660 chipset in combination with the Sony IMX078 sensor simply does not. This interplay also occurs in the Hawkeye Firefly 6K. These interpolated 4K are reproduced “only” with 24 fps. For this she creates 60 frames with a full HD resolution, This is in my opinion for home videos or even semi-professional videos still more than adequate. If you need a 4-time deceleration of your shots, you have to access the 1280 x 720 p resolution.
The typical “Action Cam Look” is created by the ultraweitwinklige perspective. MGCOOL uses an angle of 170°. Especially in action-packed scenarios, this is practical, just like the built-in digital image stabilization by gyroscope. In order to elicit the user’s full creativity, you can try time-lapse or slow-motion mode. Even more creative can be with the Lightdrawing mode. The shutter speed is extended to such an extent that one can paint with a light almost in the image section under dark light conditions.
So much for the MGCOOL Explorer 2C. As for this price class typical, the customer here is not a native 4K served. Why you should decide for this and not for a different Action Cam? Hard to say! The Explorer 2C I personally like of the design better than competition models, but does not justify the partial but a little big price difference. Interesting for me is also the Lightdrawing mode and the extensive accessories, which is delivered directly. However, one can get with the already mentioned Firefly 6K almost the same and must pay significantly less. If you want to use native 4K in this price class better to the ThiEYE T5e, Nevertheless, we will test the MGCOOL Explorer 2C, as the overall impression is true.
