Elephone S8 review: almost borderless smartphone with 6 inch display for $239.99

Not just the name reminds here of the current top model of the smartphone giant Samsung. What was already apparent with the Elephone S7, the successor again further. The Elephone S8 comes with a 6 inch display in an almost borderless housing. What the S8 of the manufacturer Elephone has to offer, you can see in the overview.

The design is probably the obvious trump of the Elephone S8. The 6-inch display with a 2K resolution applies to a minimum housing area. The top, left and right of the display is almost nonexistent. The American likes to speak of the ” bezel-less ” smartphone. Only the underside comes with a screen edge on which the rectangular home button and the front camera should be located. The size and the resolution of the display result in a pixel density of 489 ppi. What type of display it ultimately becomes, is not yet known, but this is protected by Gorilla glass from the company Corning.

The material of the housing is still unclear. For this, the back seems slightly curved, so that the smartphone is as comfortable as possible in the hand. The dimensions are 15.8 x 8 x 0.8 cm and with 180g it is slightly larger and heavier than the top models Xiaomi Mi 6 and Honor 9. Regarding the connections, Elephone operates minimalism and apparently concentrates on only one USB type C connection and dispenses with a 3.5 mm jack connection.

Visually hui, inside pfui? Apparently not. The Elephone S8 is equipped with the Helio X25 processor with ten cores. However, the ten cores are not clocked at the same time. Four cores are clocked with “only” 1.4 GHz, a second cluster with four cores clocks with 2 GHz. For maximum performance, the two A72 cores provide a clock frequency of up to 2.5 GHz. In addition, there is the Mali T880 GPU, which is also used for example in the MEIIGOO M1.

The 4 GB of built-in memory is responsible for multitasking . A value that should be sufficient for everyday applications and games in any case. Although the S8 64 GB internal memory, which is however with microSD optionally up to 512 GB can be added up. To ensure that the 6-inch display is supplied with sufficient power, the manufacturer uses a 4,000 mAh battery. Because the processor and the screen should be energy-saving, the battery should last longer than a day. This can be charged by Pump Express 2.0.

The trend of the Dual Lens Cameras does not make the Elephone S8 with. It is equipped with a 21 megapixel sensor, which is also to allow in low-light situations detailed photos. According to experience, we would like to convince ourselves. For this, a front camera with 8 megapixels is used.

Connectivity & Tools

As already mentioned, Elephone only uses one port, the new USB Type C standard. A headphone jack is missing. The matching headphones are apparently also not included in the delivery. For example, the Xiaomi ANC In-Ears with USB C connection would be an option. For this, the mobile phone LTE has volume 20, so that fast Internet reception is also secured in more remote areas. Although the manufacturer is offering two nano SIM slots, one of them will certainly be compatible with microSD cards, which will effectively “only” a hybrid SIM slot available. Apart from this, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WLAN are also on board.

Forecast to S8

With the Elephone P8 Mini, the manufacturer has managed to launch a convincing low-budget smartphone on the market. For about two times the price, Elephone with the S8 would now land the big throw. The combination of the used processor and the memory we like well and is for interesting users certainly interesting. The biggest focus is clearly on the display and the almost borderless design, How precise the manufacturer works and how design and function beat in the practice test, however, remains to be seen. The pre-sale phase for the smartphone has just begun and more precise specifications regarding the housing and the display panel used have not yet been established. If new information emerges, these will of course be handed down.
