Processing & design

With dimensions of 5.9 x 4.1 x 2.1 cm and a weight of 66 g, the Elephone Explorer Dual REXSO 4K Action Cam is slightly thinner but also minimally heavier than the Elephone ELECAM Explorer S.  The sides of the small Action Cam were ribbed, which means that a better grip is possible. This is useful for such a thin gadget. They are also available in three different colors: sky blue, wine red and champagne colors.

A special feature of the REXSO is the dual display. A two inch display with a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels can be found on the back. This is not a touchscreen. On the front is a smaller 0.66 inch OLED display, which provides information on time / date, mode and battery status. Below is the Power button.

In addition to the recording button on the top is the integrated microphone. While there are two function buttons on the right side, the connections and slots are found on the left side. In addition to the microSD slot sits the micro-USB port, which is intended to charge the cam. There is apparently also a micro-HDMI interface. On a tripod thread, Elephone has renounced.

In this color variation, the Elephone Action Cam knows to stand out from the competition.

The term 4K can be somewhat misleading especially with Chinese Action Cams, since often no native 4K is supported and / or the Framerate is unusable. The Elephone Explorer Dual supports 24fps in the 4K resolution. However, this resolution is only interpolated here. It is so far only known that the Novatek NT96660 chipset has been installed, which is used, for example, in the Hawkeye Firefly 6S. With Full HD resolution can be filmed in 60fps, which allows the HD material to play at half speed and simple slow motion videos are no problem. A wide angle of 170 ° is filmed.

In addition to slow motion, the opposite, the time lapse function, is just as possible. Very helpful is also the built-in electronic gyroscope image stabilization, the recordings not so blurred. It is likely that the image cut is cut somewhat. A zoom is not integrated like most action cams. Recordings can of course also be realized up to 30m under water, but the appropriate underwater case is necessary.

Elephone Explorer Dual REXSO screen
The Elephone comes with a 2 inch display on the back and a 0.66 inch OLED display on the front.

Unfortunately, it is not yet known which sensor elephone is installed in the REXSO 4K. Apparently, however, photos with a resolution of 16 MP should be possible, but these will be interpolated, so not native. A 1050mAh large battery ensures a suitable running performance . The manufacturer indicates that this is sufficient for a runtime of 60 minutes when filmed. You can even have three days in standby mode. The camera must then be charged for three hours.

Pleasingly, Elephone does not spare the accessories at the wrong corners and the REXSO 4K donates some accessories. In addition to the camera is a waterproof case, a bicycle holder, a helmet holder, a universal holder including adapter and several small parts as well as a USB cable.

Elephone Explorer Dual REXSO 4K
The Explorer Dual is available in champagne gold, wine red and sky blue.

For under 60 euros the Elephone Explorer Dual REXSO 4K Action Cam could be really interesting and seems to be attractive for some more ambitious filmmakers. This is dispensed with a touch screen is a matter of taste. Just like the design, which I like however well. With the two displays and the same chipset, it reminds me of the already mentioned Hawkeye Firefly 6S. The biggest thorn in my eye is that so far the sensor is not officially known. For the price, the offered service is appropriate, but not innovative. What do you say? Would you like a test of the Elephone Action Camera?
