Design and processing

Even at first glance it becomes clear that the MIX is not a smartphone like any other. The display takes almost the entire front and is nearly border less on three sides; The loudspeaker that sits above the display must give way and the Selfie camera slides under the display. The frame is made of metal, the back of ceramic, and especially the latter, according to the first experience reports, ensure a particularly smooth and therefore slippery surface – a slip resistant cover is strongly recommended.

Xiaomi Mi MIX size compared to iPhone 7 Plus
You do not really have to calculate: the display covers an amazingly large part of the front.

For a 6.5 inch smartphone, the Mi MIX is not particularly large, which of course is on the screen. With a weight of 209 g, it is not really easy to measure, but it is still quite difficult.

Display

The probably most prominent feature and absolute highlight of the smartphone. Xiaomi is proud of its 91.3% “screen-to-body ratio”, which has not yet been achieved by the competition. The unusual aspect ratio of 17: 9 results in a resolution of 2040 x 1080p with 355ppi.

Needing to get used to: the large display displaces the Selfie camera to the bottom.

Power

The Mi MIX features a Snapdragon 821 processor, which makes the smartphone one of the top performers in terms. All the benchmark results so far make the MIX land far ahead, and all applications, including graphic games, should run smoothly. In the memory you have as often the choice between two different models: In the basic version, there is 4GB RAM and already very good 128GB memory, while the more expensive model is 6GB RAM and a whopping 265GB of memory . Who actually needs SD cards?

Operating system

The pre-installed operating system MIUI 8.0 is based on Android 6 , whereby it is foreseeable that there will be an upgrade to Android 7 in due course. First, only English and Chinese are supported as languages, and the playstore must also be installed.

Camera

The camera is the numbers not quite at the level of the remaining hardware, but anything but bad. The main camera has a 16MP sensor with dual LED flash and an f / 2.0 aperture, videos can be recorded with 4K.

The 16MP camera on the back.

Problematic is the selfie camera, which only 5MP creates and – as mentioned above – s.nwohnere place under the display sits. For self-help, this means that the phone must be turned upside down. Although the image is rotated with it, this is a little cumbersome and not really intuitive.

Battery and runtime

With 4400mAh capacity also the battery plays in the top league, which is synonymous with the size of the display and the associated higher energy requirement but also necessary. In the ideal case, however, it is sufficient for a second day use before the MIX has to be plugged in again. Thanks to Quick charge, the battery should then be fully charged in almost 1 1/2 hours. It should be possible to remove the cover on the back and replace the battery.

Connectivity: Connections and connections

As expected, the MIX has a USB type C connector , as well as a dual SIM slot for two SIM cards. Even if the smartphone supports LTE, must be renounced on volume 20 (800MHz) once again – so important is Xiaomi the German market then probably not yet. As additional connection possibilities exist Bluetooth 4.2 and of course ac-WLAN as well as GPS. A headphone jack is located on the top.

There is a special feature when talking to the MIX. As mentioned above, there is no conventional loudspeaker above the display for lack of space; instead, the sound is  transmitted via the housing, which is vibrated by means of a so-called piezoelectric acoustic system. Sounds a bit off, and in reality also to provide a somewhat unusual sound.

Conclusion

The Mi MIX is currently one of the most innovative as well as the most powerful smartphones on the market, which is however also in the price for a mobile phone from China high price. For similar products of the competition from Korea and the USA one pays even times more than 750 €, but here also often the tax is added, therefore uses the best tax-free shipping or alternatively waits for an offer from an EU warehouse.
