Processing and design
As for the design of the Mi 6, you have to compliment Xiaomi just a compliment. The smartphone is slim, noble, has a wonderful curved back of glass and a like I find beautiful Homebutton. We have got the black version of the mobile phone sent, which has a simpler effect than the models in blue and gold, the optical benefits but less felt.
Both the front and the back are covered by glass, but in the most expensive version, the Mi 6 gets a ceramic back as in Mi 5. Overall, a very good first impression remains if you hold the Mi 6 for the first time in the hand.
Before I lose myself in Lobeshymnen, I also want to go on a few disturbing blemishes, which the smartphone has definitely synonymous. The glass surface has the unsightly disadvantage that both front and back are very prone to fingerprints and smearing. In addition, the rear side is extremely slippery, and already slides on slightly sloping surfaces the Mi 6. At least there is a rubber cover directly, which helps at both points remedy, the Mi 6 but also the elegance a bit far.
At all four corners (but only there), the transition between the back of the glass and the metal frame is somewhat unclean, and the gap can be felt very clearly when the finger is touched.
Power button and volume buttons on the right could be somewhat less “wobbly” for my feeling, but otherwise fit well into the metal frame. The home button, which is about a millimeter deep, looks really good and reacts pleasantly fast. The fingerprint scanner is one of the fastest I’ve ever seen in a smartphone.
Power of the Xiaomi Mi 6
Even if the Mi 6 was more expensive than its predecessor last year, Xiaomi offers for the now sunken, fair price a lot of technology and equipment. Already the most favorable variant contains the Snapdragon 835 , the processor, which is also installed in the Samsung Galaxy S8, as well as 6GB memory . In the Antutu benchmark test it reaches up to 180,000 points and thus even hits the Galaxy S8 . Only the iPhone 7 Plus reaches higher values.
Differences between the versions exist only with the contained internal memory, which is 64GB in the first and 128GB in the middle and most expensive version. However, there is no SD card slot to expand the memory; You have to get along with what you have.
A little surprising, the Mi 6 masters all challenges effortlessly. The device boots quickly, apps are loaded and executed without delay, even in multiple applications in the background. Even demanding games make the mobile phone no problems.
We had the unique phenomenon that the smartphone seems to have rebooted itself independently. The problem was one of the users of the Mi 5 heard. It just happened once during the entire test, and we’ve tested the Chinese version, but it should be mentioned.
On the display, Xiaomi relies on a 5.15-inch Full HD IPS LCD with a pixel density of 428ppi. The fingerprint sensor is located on the front and is installed directly underneath the glass. It is a 10-point touch screen, which recognizes and implements all inputs quickly and accurately, even if the double-tap function, which can be adjusted to unlock the display, often requires two or three attempts.
Xiaomi-typical are many special functions for the individual adjustment of the display available. The display has a very good automatic (or adjustable) brightness, whereby it is comparatively easy to recognize, even in strong sunlight. Contrast and sharpness are also above-average.
The battery is also generously designed with 3350mAh for a top smartphone, even if some middle class smartphones now offer much more. Pure from the indicated capacity but one lies before the top models of Apple, Samsung and Huawei. The optimized MIUI, which is based on Android 7..1 Nougat, should also save energy and ensure a longer battery life.
The main camera is a 12MP dual camera, which has a 4-axis optical image stabilization, a digital (10x) and an optical zoom (2x). In portrait mode, the background is blurred to shoot more professional photos (bokeh effect), as well as various enhancements such as a skin lightening (especially for the Asian market).
Especially the bokeh effect works well, and the photos are much more professional. Rarely it was so simple, that amateur photographers as well as professionals can feel.
Bokeh effect of the camera
The only connection is the USB C connection on the bottom side, a jack connection is – as with the iPhone 7 – not. You can still use your headphones, and a corresponding adapter is included with your smartphone. Only during the loading is now no longer, but you need now a pair of Bluetooth headphones. One possibility is also Xiaomi’s new Type-C headphones , which can also be connected without adapter to the USB port of the Mi 6.
For the first time, two speakers (top and bottom) have been installed, and the stereo sound is pleasing despite the not optimal volume.
As expected, the Mi 6 supports 2G and 3G without restrictions, but in the 4G network, however, the known problem that band 20 (800MHz) is not with it . The reception is excellent. An ordinary WiFi module (802.11a / b / g / n / ac) is, of course, on board, just like a new Bluetooth 5.0 module. Again, there is no problems in use, range and speed are excellent.
A lot of extras do not exist, besides the 1m long charging cable (USB type C) but still an adapter for headphones, for which the own connection is well-known missing. The guide is in our case exclusively in Chinese, however, we also have the Chinese version of the smartphone. The version with Global-ROM should have English-language instructions. What remains Chinese, however, is the power plug, for which you need an adapter (or simply use a separate power supply, because USB ports are luckily internationally uniform).
Price & Conclusion
The Mi 6 is priced at currently under € 400 in the cheapest version, the medium at around 460 €. This is already much cheaper than the at least 500 € in advance sale; How the price will develop in the future remains to be seen. Although it is more expensive than then the predecessor, the price-performance ratio remains first class, since the Mi 6 plays with top models like the iPhone 7 and Galaxy S8 in a league.
The Xiaomi Mi 6 has become an excellent smartphone, and rightly puts itself in the top group of high-end devices. The hardware and the benchmark results do not allow two opinions. The design is very nice and the workmanship outstanding. The camera also impresses with the successful bokeh effects. Xiaomi has become accustomed to the missing volume 20, unfortunately the trend of the lack of a jack connection is now being made.
