An e-reader, with which one can also telephone? One way or the other one could describe the new Smartphone from Vernee, the 5.0 inch Smartphone comes with only a display, which has an actually obsolete resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, but it also brings a new feature with it. Just press a small button on the side of the smartphone and the device changes to the E-ink mode. But more about this later. The display shows colors amazingly well and in spite of the lower resolution, pictures, texts and videos are reproduced quite sharply.

The whole device is quite handy with its size of 14.5 x 7.0 x 0.86cm and also the weight ( 149 grams ) would not suspect what is in the budget smartphone. The back of the Vernee Thor E breaks out a bit from the gray mass of the handydesigns and presents itself in a “Brushed Metal” -look, as well as the finger bath pressure sensor as well as the 13MP camera.

In the “E-ink” mode, the screen automatically darkens, everything is displayed in black and white and the processor and the graphics chip work in an energy-saving mode. This is not really an E-ink display, as one knows it for example of Amazon’s eReader (Kindle). Nevertheless, this function saves the battery so much, that with only 20% still manage a whole day. The mode can also be used well if you want to read longer texts. Personally, when reading, but frankly a big display is more important.

Battery pack

In addition to this feature, the battery is also a great plus for the Vernee Thor E. With its 5020mAH , the new smartphone is only surpassed by a few devices such as the  Ulefone Power 2 . The battery is hardly noticeable at the depth (0.86cm) or at the weight (149 grams) of the device.

About Quick Charge the Vernee Thor E also has the way. So if you want to avoid Powerbanks absolutely, with the Thor E pretty good chances.Vernee Thor E

Hardware

Performance technically, the Thor E actually surprised me. At the price and with regard to the 2 year old middle class CPU MTK6753 (1.3GHz, 8 cores) I would have expected rather with worse. Especially but probably because of the 3GB memory makes the smartphone a really solid figure. In a short test with the racing game Asphalt 8 I could not find any rucker. Multitasking, smaller games and somewhat more demanding applications, the mobile phone is amazingly well away, but of course it does not come up to current devices from higher price categories.

Connectivity & Tools

Band 20 is indeed rather untypical for budget smartphones, the Vernee Thor E but fortunately nevertheless with suitable LTE band. The manufacturer Vernee unfortunately for this Smartphone unfortunately a Type C connection waived. So you have to arrange, if you decide for the Thor E, continue with the good old MicroUSB.

Furthermore, the device offers the possibility to use two SIM cards at the same time. However, if you want to extend the internal memory via a MicroSD, you do not need this function. Too bad. With just 16GB of memory, of which you can also use only 10.13GB , the expansion of the memory space is actually compulsory. But whoever thinks he comes with the 10GB from and for example otherwise always walks with a second handy, will certainly look forward to the DualSim function.

The accessories are, as always, limited to basic things. In addition to the smartphone, the white pack also contains a charging cable, a power plug and a user manual.

Conclusion

The Vernee Thor E is a great beginner / budget smartphone, for about 100 € you get a whole lot. The large battery in combination with the E-ink mode lets the smartphone use quite a long time until it has to be recharged. The CPU as well as the 3GB RAM ensure a good performance and allows a smooth use of browser, Youtube and smaller games. If however it is more important to get a little more power or a better camera at the similar price, should also look at the Xiaomi Redmi 4A . However, the Thor E should be a good choice, especially for people who want to read a lot on the mobile phone and use their smartphone for surfing.
