The design is reminiscent of the predecessor in many respects. This is due, on the one hand, to the special glass back (called Aurora Glass), which seems to change its color depending on the viewing angle. On the other hand, both the placement of the dual cameras in the upper left and the dimensions (147.3 × 70.9 × 7.45 mm) and weight ( 155 g ) are almost identical.
Only the fingerprint sensor was moved from the back to the front, where in my opinion it is also better. The frame is made of metal and is rounded at all corners.
The 5.15 inch display offers a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and covers the DCI-P3 color space . This feature was recently implemented by Samsung on the Galaxy S8 and Apple on the iPhone 7. The screen has a pixel density of 428PPI and is therefore sufficiently sharp and at eye level with the Mi 6.
As a processor Huawei installed the in-house HiSilicon Kirin 960. This Octa Core processor consists of two quad core clusters in ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture. The big cluster consists of four ARM Cortex-A73 cores with 2.4GHz , while the LITTLE cluster clocks with 1.8GHz . The powerful processor is supported by an ARM Mali-G71 MP8 graphic unit with 1,037 MHz. This SoC is already used in the Huawei Mate 9 and P10 and does an excellent job there.
Also in the working memory was not saved and thus the fast standard LPDDR4 is used. Optionally, the Honor offers 4 or 6 GB of it. Mass storage is also available in two sizes: Users must choose between 64GB and 128GB.
The fixed battery has 3,200mAh and offers FastCharge . How long this should hold and how fast it is then full is not yet announced. However, you should come with a “only” 5.15 inch 1080P display well through the day, when you see that a OnePlus 3T at 5.5 inches also “only” 200mAh more installed.
Cameras are used as already mentioned a total of three. The two main cameras on the back both have an f/2.2 small aperture – here I would have wanted a slightly larger. The color sensor has a 12MP resolution while the monochrome has even 20MP. Combined then also a twofold optical “hybrid zoom” is possible, but unfortunately no further information is known. The front camera has 8MP and a larger f / 2.0 aperture.
Connectivity & Tools
LTE (Cat.12) is of course supported and also VoLTE can be used. At the end of this month, there will be an event in Berlin to present the Honor 9 officially. The available version will of course have all the frequencies important for Germany. The version currently available in China does not support the LTE Band 20 unfortunately. The SIM slot is a hybrid slot , where you have to decide between more memory or a second SIM card. WLAN you have with the Honor 9 also over the current AC standard on the 5 GHz frequency .
For the position determination you can go back to GPS & GLONASS and Bluetooth is available in the version 4.2 – unfortunately not yet version 5. The Honor 9 may be happy to call a headphone output , which makes it better for me now than the Mi 6. The charging connector is USB Type-C and between the jack connector and the speaker on the bottom.
The Honor 9 is already available in China and costs for us in the 4GB/64GB variant just under 423 € cost. For 2GB more RAM are then again 60 € due and who wants to have still 128GB main memory would like to pay about 534 €. However, these prices will still fall. Besides the memory, you also have the choice between color, blue, black, silver and gold.
The Honor 9 makes a very good first impression. Externally does not seem so much to the predecessor to have changed, which in this case but nothing bad should be. In the interior is set to the latest standards and hardware , with which the Honor 9 also must not hide from a Xiaomi Mi 6. Question is still the price, if the Honor 9 in Germany is released. The Honor 8 was last year from 399 € in the cheapest version to have.
What do you think of Honor 9? Have you already gained experience with Huawei/Honor Smartphones?
